Message from the Chair

Hello, and welcome to all new and returning HSC families. My name is Kathryn and I am happy and honoured to be the HSC Parents’ Guild Chair for 2016-17. I have two children at the College—one in Middle School and one in Montessori. We have been an HSC family for four years, and have witnessed the growth and fostering of our children. We have also participated in great events as parents, and as a family.

The Parents’ Guild (PG) is an integral part of school life, and is made up of all HSC parents and caregivers of students enrolled at the College. You are automatically a member! As a team, we contribute our ideas, skills and feedback, and dedicate countless hours to support the education, well-being and social interactions of our children. We model the importance of our work when we come together and support HSC’s mandate that a vibrant school community is a priority.

Every month, the PG meets to discuss and plan events, and to connect and learn more about the school. We are active participants in the HSC community. Our meetings are held in the morning on the first Wednesday of the month, and we often invite staff as guest speakers. HSC also participates in the Canadian Accredited Independent Schools (CAIS) Interguild through the Parents’ Guild.

On October 28, the PG will host Monster Mash. It is a “howlingly” good time for families and we encourage both children and adults to come in costume. In the past, we have organized highly successful Staff Appreciation Breakfasts with funds donated by the HSC families. The PG was also able to provide food to the annual Staff Games thanks to the generosity of our community.

The PG plays an important role in HSC Homecoming Weekend in May by organizing the Vendor Village, helping kids develop their entrepreneurial and charitable skills. Throughout the year, gently used student-to-student uniform sales are available in the Campus Store thanks to the efforts of the PG. We also hold a few large community sales, where we combine and sell all donated clothing (after ensuring it meets our quality controls). These sales take place on the two orientation days prior to the start of school, and often we hold a third in the spring, typically when the Head of College announces the transition to summer dress.

PG members make many day-to-day contributions to HSC as well. Ambassadors to each of the four schools keep members connected to each other. Members participate in all sorts of activities throughout the College, making connections to staff and educators. Every year the PG raises funds for HSC initiatives. In 2016-17, the PG donated a Student Bursary to the Head of College Fund and the David Tutty Joy and Innovation Fund, and gave a one-time donation to the HSC Capital Campaign.

I hope you will consider participating in the HSC Parents’ Guild. We are an active group of volunteers and we’d love to meet you!
